Worth knowing: The evergreen shrub with its ascendant branches and the conical or roundish, strongly ramified crown, is a very popular bonsai with newcomers as well as experienced bonsai lovers. With its flexible branches it can easily be designed. Due to its origins, the Chinese Juniper has a high tolerance for drought, heat and frost. Every bonsai type except the broom shape are possible for cultivation.. Natural Place: The Chinese Juniper has its natural habitat in East China and Japan, where it grows along the rugged coasts and in rocky heights of up to 2300 meters. Cultivation: Seed propagation indoors is possible throughout the year. To increase the germinability, you should initially place the seeds embedded in a bowl with sand in the freezer of your refrigerator for about two weeks for stratification. Then, plant the seeds about 1 cm deep into moist potting compost and cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the earth from drying out. Don’t forget to make some holes in the clear film and take it every second or third day completely off for about 2 hours. That way you avoid mold formation on your potting compost. Place the seed container somewhere bright and warm with a temperature between 20° and 25° Celsius and keep the earth moist, but not wet. The first seedlings will come up after eight to twelve weeks. Place: The Chinese Juniper prefers a full sunny place, and only during summer it should at least be kept light shaded. Care: The best option for cultivation would be a ready-mixed soil for outdoor bonsai plants. Water the plant regularly during the growth period, but see that the upper layer of the substrate has dried before watering again, and avoid waterlogging. At a steady sprouting, you can easily pluck out the new shoot tips during the growth period. Additionally you may thin out the long sprouts of the plant with a small scissors during spring and at the end of summer. The sight of rocky slopes with wild growing Chinese Juniper are the role model for the modern driftwood style. With the proper tools big parts of the dead wood can be designed without seriously damaging the plant. The Chinese Juniper sprouts rather late, so it can be repotted ever until end of May if necessary. During Winter: During winter the Chinese Juniper likes to be kept in a preferably bright and frost-protected place with regular watering. Very cool temperatures will result in a bronze colouring of the leaves that will disappear during spring.
