Their cones turn from green to dark brown over time and stand upright on the branches.. Natural Place: The Nordmann fir, also known as the Caucasus fir, is native to the western Caucasus. There it grows on clay soils at altitudes of 1,000 to 2,000 meters. Cultivation: Before sowing, the seeds need a cold treatment (stratification) as cold germs. Place the seeds in the freezer for a day or two, then wrap them in cling film along with the moist sand and refrigerate for about eight to 10 days. You can then sow the seeds directly outdoors. However, it makes more sense to grow the seeds indoors where you can do it all year round. Spread the seeds on a mixture of soil and sand or growing medium and cover them with some soil. Cover the culture vessel with cling film or a translucent lid. This protects the substrate from drying out. You should remove the foil for 2 hours every two to three days. This prevents mold from forming on the growing soil. Place the seed pot in a light and warm place with 15 to 25° Celsius and keep the potting soil moist but not wet. The first seedlings appear after six to twelve weeks. When repotting, make sure that the container is tall, as the fir develops strong taproots. Place: The Nordmann fir likes sunny to partially shaded locations. Young seedlings, however, should be protected from direct sunlight. Due to the later high space requirement in old age, you should choose an open location where the fir can later spread widely. The soil should ideally be loose, moist and rich in nutrients. Care: The Nordmann fir is not very demanding in terms of care. The soil should only be kept regularly moist. With increasing age, the fir becomes more robust. Regular fertilization is not necessary. The even growth comes into its own without pruning. When trimmed, the fir does not sprout again from the old wood. During Winter: Older Nordmann firs are usually hardy. However, tree discs, trunks and branches of young trees should be protected with garden fleece, straw mats or brushwood.
